UCSB CS is Looking for Graduate Students:
Apply by December 15th

The Computer Science Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is inviting applications for its PhD and MS programs (application deadline is December 15th). Students can apply to the PhD program directly after obtaining their undergraduate degrees in computer science or in a related field of science or engineering.

The Computer Science Department at UCSB is a young, energetic, and dynamic department, world renowned for its strong research program and award winning faculty. Our rankings have climbed faster than any other department over the last several years. Recent ranking of the graduate programs by the National Research Council (NRC) puts our department in the top ten in the United States (see information about the NRC rankings), in the top two of University of California campuses, and in the top two of US public universities.

Our department includes over 30 distinguished faculty members whose research programs cover all areas of computer science including: bioinformatics, computer architecture, computational science and engineering, database and information systems, foundations and algorithms, intelligent and interactive systems, networking, operating systems and distributed systems, programming languages and software engineering and security. Over the last ten years our external research funding has grown by a factor of 6X, and our graduate program has grown to over 100 PhD and 40 Masters students. Every year 40-50 new graduate students join our department.

Our graduate students have been employed by top industry and academic institutions including: Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Ohio State, Purdue, University of Rochester, University of Florida, Virginia Tech, University of Delaware, Cal Poly, CSULA, Hofstra University, Mount Holyoke, ETH (Switzerland), Chinese University of Hong Kong, Polytechnic University of Hong Kong, University of Birmingham (UK), METU (Turkey), UFMG (Brazil), National Chengchi University (Taiwan), Google, Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, Yahoo, IBM, Citrix Online, Amazon.com, Ask.com, Adobe, Lucent, Nokia, NEC and others.

UCSB is one of the top research universities in the world. The Times Higher Education’s 2010 World University Rankings places UCSB 29th (see The Times Higher Education ranking). In addition to its academic excellence, UCSB is a beautiful place with exceedingly friendly staff, students, and faculty. Newsweek sums it up nicely: “If there’s a more beautiful campus than this one at the edge of the Pacific, we haven’t seen it. For many students, that would seal the deal, but UCSB also boasts Nobel Prize winners on its faculty, top research centers in science and technology and an extensive study-abroad program. Aside from the top academics, a big draw for many is the variety of recreation. The campus has its own beaches where students can surf, and the Big Bear ski resort is just a few hours’ drive.”

Energetic and ambitious students who are enthusiastic about computer science and who want to shape the future of computing by conducting research on the frontiers of our discipline are encouraged to apply to our graduate program.
